Summer Youth Initiative
For the fifth consecutive summer, The Springfield Project (TSP) will sponsor its Summer Youth Initiative (SYI) which gives Springfield youth an opportunity to spend their time off in a healthy and productive manner. SYI affords its young participants practical work experience in a variety of work settings with participating businesses and agencies throughout the community so that they can gain new skills while earning a paycheck from TSP.
This highly successful endeavor has provided summer work opportunities for nearly 100 area youth since its inception. The program serves to prepare young people for real world work experiences by allowing them to be evaluated on their attitude, timeliness, appearance and overall work ethic. Emphasis is also placed on assisting the youth on development in the areas of time and money management, college preparation and professionalism.
The six-weeks that area youth spend engaged in this “earn while you learn” initiative exposes them to such work environments as clerical, maintenance, camp counseling, food service and yard/landscaping projects. The four hour work days, four days a week provide the participants an opportunity that educates them in a variety of areas while enhancing their skills.
